CoverRegions in Europe — 2021 interactive edition

Updated with 2019 and 2020 data EU Member States are often compared with each other, but in reality it can be difficult to contrast small countries like Luxembourg or Malta with larger ones such as France or Germany. Analysing data at a regional level can highlight disparities either across the EU or within countries, such as an east-west divide in Germany or a north-south divide in Italy.

The interactive publication Regions in Europe — statistics visualised offers a range of interactive visualisations accompanied by short texts that allow you to compare your region with other regions in Europe. The publication is divided into three principal sections: people and society, economic activities, the environment and natural resources.| multimedia

CoverApplying the Degree of Urbanisation — A methodological manual to define cities, towns and rural areas for international comparisons — 2021 edition

This manual has been produced in close collaboration by six organisations — the European Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and The World Bank.

It presents a harmonised methodology to facilitate international statistical comparisons and to classify the entire territory of a country along an urban-rural continuum. The degree of urbanisation classification defines cities, towns and semi-dense areas, and rural areas.

This manual is intended to complement and not replace the definitions used by national statistical offices (NSOs) and ministries. It has been designed principally as a guide for data producers, suppliers and statisticians so that they have the necessary information to implement the methodology and ensure coherency within their data collections. It may also be of interest to users of subnational statistics so they may better understand, interpret and use official subnational statistics for taking informed decisions and policymaking. [+]

CoverQuality of life in European cities
Luxemburgo: OPOCE, 2020

What city is the cleanest or the safest? In which city is easy to find a job or a house? Which city has the best public transport or air quality? Answers to these questions and many more can be found in the latest Report on the Quality of life in European Cities, 2020. This report summarises the results of the 5th survey of European cities, which covers 83 cities and was carried out in 2019.

The new Quality of life in European cities survey provides a unique insight into city life. It gathers the experiences and opinions of city dwellers across Europe. It shows that people living in northern EU cities are the most satisfied with their city, but satisfaction in eastern EU cities is increasingly rapidly. People living in a large city are more satisfied with public transport, but those living in smaller cities feel safer when walking alone at night.

Most people think their city is a good place for minorities, but in some cities less than half the residents think this is the case. For the first time, the survey includes questions about the quality of the city administration. For example, half of the city residents think there is corruption in their city administration, but in the worst cities four in five think this is the case compared to only one in five in the best cities.

The interactive maps and spider charts are another novelty. Below people can select the questions they want to see on a map and they can select for which city they want to see an overview of how it compares the average city and the best and the worst city in the survey. Both maps and charts can be downloaded. Under the maps and spider charts, you will find addition information, including all the maps and charts of the questions used in the report, the data, the full questionnaire and a technical report on the survey. CoverCities in the World - A New Perspective on Urbanisation
OCDE Urban Studies, 2020

Cities are not only home to around half of the global population but also major centers of economic activity and innovation. Yet, so far there has been no consensus of what a city really is. Substantial differences in the way cities, metropolitan, urban, and rural areas are defined across countries hinder robust international comparisons and an accurate monitoring of SDGs. The report Cities in the World: A New Perspective on Urbanisation addresses this void and provides new insights on urbanisation by applying for the first time two new definitions of human settlements to the entire globe: the Degree of Urbanisation and the Functional Urban Area. Based on the definitions, the report presents new evidence of recent and future urbanisation trends and sheds light on the evolution of metropolitan areas around the globe. It examines whether and why quality of life differs between cities and other types of settlements. It analyses the relationship between economic development and the metropolitan system in countries around the world. Finally, it presents new evidence on the changing shape of cities and its impact on sustainability. The report demonstrates how globally consistent definitions of cities and metropolitan areas can contribute to more effective policy design. [+]
