The proceedings of the International Conference on EU Comparative Statistics on Income and Living Conditions, which was held in Helsinki (6-8 November 2006), gather contributions from key experts in the field of income measurement, social exclusion and living conditions analysis. Their contributions focused on the relevance and the assessment of the different dimensions of the new EU-SILC instrument, which provides comparable data on income, living conditions and social exclusion for policy and social research purposes. The objective of this compendium is to be a practical manual for specialised producers, namely the tourism statistics sections in national statistical institutes belonging to or related to the European Statistical System. The document gives an overview of the contacts in Eurostat and the current legislation in the field of tourism statistics (in English, French and German), but focuses on the data transmission formats and codes to be used. In 2005, the EU-25 invested EUR 25 bn in the BRIC countries, which is 5% down on 2004 (EUR 27 bn). The share of BRIC to extra-EU-25 outflows dropped from 20 % in 2004 to 15 % in 2005. For the same year, China and Russia were the main destinations of EU-25 FDI outflows to the BRIC countries. EU FDI in the BRIC countries was more profitable than FDI in extra-EU as a whole for 2001-2004. [+]

It is divided into two parts: the first part is devoted to a special topic, which in the 2005-2006 edition is The Balance between Generations in an Ageing Europe, and is explored in depth and the second part consists of statistical portraits covering the full range of social policy issues and a data appendix. The SiF presents the main trends in asylum applications in the European Union in 2006. Number of asylum applicants in the EU has been falling for the past five years and in 2006 there were 192 000 applications lodged in 27 EU Member States. This compared with 670 000 applications in 1992 marked a significant decrease during this period. [+]

One of the key objectives of the European Union is to keep up regional competitiveness and employment. High-tech sectors could help to achieve this goal as they are generally considered key drivers for economic growth and productivity. They are associated with innovation and hence tend to gain a larger market share, create new product markets and use resources more efficiently. However, employment in high-tech sectors is not evenly distributed across regions but is mainly concentrated around a few larger cities, especially Île de France (FR). [+]

Defining and measuring biotechnology is a challenge for statisticians. There is no single sector of biotechnology which can be easily and clearly distinguished from other technology sectors. The current publication illustrates different aspects of biotechnology with the help of different kinds of data such as patent applications, R&D intensity and R&D investment. In 2003 Denmark was world leader in biotechnology patent applications to the EPO per million inhabitants, whereas in Europe Germany ranked first in absolute figures. The United Kingdom was the most active European country in biotechnology R&D investment. This publication sheds light on both the statistical and the legal sides of biotechnology. [+]

Men and women employed on fixed-term contracts involuntarily.

Almost 15% of women employees and around 14% of men were employed in jobs with fixed-term contracts in the EU as a whole in 2005. A significant proportion of these worked in fixed-term jobs because they could not find a permanent job. The focus here is on the women and men concerned, on their relative numbers, their age, the activities and occupations in which they are employed and the typical duration of their contracts of employment.
