Key figures on Europe - 2023 edition

This sixth edition of Key figures on Europe follows on from the success of previous years’ publication. It aims to provide intuitive visualisations, innovative data presentations and more concise text, so users can rapidly obtain an understanding of differences between Member States.

This publication provides you with a selection of interesting key statistics on the European Union (EU), its Member States as well as the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Drawing from the rich collection of data available at Eurostat, we aim to provide insight into the current situation and recent developments across the EU with regard to people and society, the economy and business, and the environment and natural resources.

This publication may be viewed as an introduction to EU statistics and provides a starting point for those who wish to explore the wide range of data that is freely available on Eurostat’s website and presented in a large number of online articles in Statistics Explained.

Healthcare non-expenditure statistics manual – Guidelines for completing the Joint questionnaire on non-monetary healthcare statistics – 2023 edition

The purpose of this publication is to support Member States in completing the OECD, Eurostat, WHO Europe Joint Questionnaire on Non-Monetary Healthcare Statistics (JQNMHC) in line with Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/2294. It provides an outline of the transmission and dissemination processes, data structure and validation rules as well as descriptions of the definitions to be used by Eurostat countries completing the JQNMHC.

Statistical requirements compendium - 2023 edition

The Statistical Requirements Compendium (SRC), published by Eurostat, serves as a reference document for the EU acquis in statistics. It summarises the key reference information for European statistical production, taking into account new legislation and other developments relevant for European statistics.

The SRC also serves as the framework for conducting compliance monitoring of the enlargement area (candidate countries and potential candidates) in the field of statistics. The 2023 edition of the Compendium follows the structure introduced in the 2017 edition, in line with the adapted version of the Classification of Statistical Activities (CSA) Rev.1 of 2009.

European business statistics user’s manual for PRODCOM – 2023 edition

This second edition manual seeks to serve statistical experts and users alike as a comprehensive reference to the PRODCOM statistics built upon the Commission Implementing Regulation EU 2020/1197 (EBS Regulation). It provides an overview of the production of manufactured goods carried out by enterprises on the national territory of the reporting countries while highlighting the features introduced by a new regulatory framework. Mainly, the manual describes the PRODCOM classification, PRODCOM dataset and its dissemination. The PRODCOM team in consultation with national experts drafted this document.

European business statistics compilers' manual for international trade in goods statistics – trade by invoicing currency — 2023 edition

This compilers’ manual is meant to serve as a practical reference document for all National Statistical Authorities involved in the compilation of EU statistics on trade in goods by invoicing currency (TIC). As such, it provides the necessary definitions and practical instructions regarding the preparation and transmission of TIC data to Eurostat.

Manual on Government Deficit and Debt – Implementation of ESA 2010 – 2022 edition

This new 2022 edition of the Manual is an updated version of the edition published in August 2019. In the current edition, at least one chapter or section of all parts has been amended in substance (see full list of amendments in the preface of the Manual), except Part 5 Sale of assets. In addition, the following new texts were introduced: section 2.6.4 Statistical recording of the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) associated flows; chapter 3.5 Capital injections into foreign direct investment; chapter 4.6 Securitisation of non-performing loans with government guarantees; chapter 4.8 Recording of loans not expected to be fully repaid; sub-section 6.3.1.6 Energy Performance Contracts; chapter 8.5 On-lending from supranational entities. As usual, this edition is the result of a collective work under the supervision of Eurostat, in cooperation with experts representing EU Member States and other international institutions.

Measuring the joint distribution of household income, consumption and wealth at the micro-level – Methodological issues and experimental results – 2023 edition

This paper provides an overview of the work of the Expert Group on the Joint Distribution of Income, Consumption and Wealth at Micro Level (EG ICW) set up by Eurostat and the OECD; it discusses the challenges on producing joint income, consumption and wealth estimates, assesses their quality, and presents selected experimental results. Although the analysis reveals large differences between countries, a number of general patterns emerge. First, income, consumption and wealth are partially correlated, with the association being stronger in the tails of the joint distribution than around its middle. Second, risk of poverty goes beyond income, with asset and consumption risk of poverty being widespread, especially among some population groups. Third, a large share of households spend more than they earn. This is corroborated by negative median saving rates for households in the bottom income quintile. Fourth, inequalities are significantly higher when using a comprehensive measure of material living standards than a distributional analysis of disposable income would suggest. Looking ahead, this paper calls for further efforts to improve the robustness of the results. Key words: income inequality, consumption inequality, wealth inequality, experimental statistics
