Nueva estrategia forestal de la Unión Europea

La Comisión Europea ha publicado hoy una nueva estrategia forestal que responde a los nuevos desafíos a los que se enfrentan los bosques y el sector forestal. Según la estrategia, los bosques, que cubren el 40 % de la superficie de la UE, constituyen un recurso importante para la mejora de la calidad de vida y la creación de puestos de trabajo, especialmente en las zonas rurales, al tiempo que protegen los ecosistemas y ofrecen a todos beneficios ecológicos.
Según este nuevo enfoque, la estrategia trasciende la cuestión de los bosques y aborda determinados aspectos de la «cadena de valor» (es decir, la forma en que se utilizan los recursos forestales para crear bienes y servicios), que tienen una gran influencia en la gestión forestal. La estrategia pone de manifiesto que los bosques no solo son importantes para el desarrollo rural, sino también para el medio ambiente y la biodiversidad, las industrias que explotan los recursos forestales, la bioenergía y la lucha contra el cambio climático. Asimismo, pone de relieve la necesidad de adoptar un planteamiento global y subraya que es preciso tener en cuenta la incidencia de otras políticas sobre los bosques y los cambios que se están produciendo fuera de las zonas forestales. La estrategia señala asimismo que las políticas afines de la UE deben tenerse plenamente en cuenta en el marco de las políticas forestales nacionales. Por último, la estrategia aboga también en favor de la creación de un sistema de información forestal que permita recopilar información armonizada sobre los bosques a escala europea.
