According to Eurostat estimates and the estimates submitted by the Member States in early June, areas under rapeseed increased strongly (+14% in comparison to 2006, +32% relative the 2002-2006 average) in response to the substantial demand for bio-energy, in particular, bio-diester. Areas under cereals are estimated to increase by 1.5%. In contrast, sugar beet areas continued to decrease (-3%) but at different rates across Member States. [+]

The Panorama of Transport presents a statistical analysis of transport in the European Union, which was recently enlarged to include Bulgaria and Romania, as well as in the EFTA and candidate countries. Some comparisons with the US and Japan have been made when possible. Alongside traffic details (vehicle movements) and transport as such (movements of people and goods), the analysis also considers infrastructure, resources, transport as a separate sector of the economy, safety, and the impact on energy consumption and the environment. In Luxembourg 46% of the human resources in science and technology (HRST) are of foreign nationality. At EU level the figure is 6%, half of whom are from other EU countries. Most EU citizens moving to Denmark to work are HRST and Denmark also has the highest job-to-job mobility rate amongst employed HRST. Nearly every third foreign student in higher education in the EU is studying in the UK and over 30% of the tertiary students in Cyprus are foreign. [+]

The purpose of this quality report is to provide the users of the European Union foreign trade statistics with a tool for assessing the quality of these statistics. It provides a summary of the main quality indicators which are: timeliness, accuracy, accessibility, clarity, comparability, and coherence. The quality report is updated annually. [+]
The 31st CEIES seminar "Are we measuring productivity correctly" was held on 12 and 13 October in Rome, Italy. It brought together data users and data producers concerned. The aims of this seminar were to: to give an overview of the state of the art in measurement of productivity worldwide, to identify major challenges for statistics with a special focus especially on the adjusted Lisbon goals and gaps in the European Statistical System, to discuss and to describe its impact on the current System of National Accounts, to brainstorm alternative solutions, including possibilities as well as limitations. The outcomes of the seminar served as the basis for addressing relevant recommendations to Eurostat which were adopted at the CEIES plenary meeting on 17 November 2006. [+]

In January 2007, twenty of the twenty seven Member States of the European Union and one candidate country had national legislation setting statutory minimum wages.
