Covering nearly 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, oceans play an outsized role in the health of our planet. They generate much of the oxygen we breathe, provide food and livelihoods for billions of people around the world, and support a vast and incredible array of species, many of which have not yet been discovered or described. An increasingly variable climate, rising sea levels, ocean pollution, and increased ocean acidity threaten human health, infrastructure, and the natural systems we rely on for life itself. The AI for Earth EU Oceans Award is focused on providing access to Azure compute resources and data science tools to Europe-based researchers who are focusing on addressing ocean-specific challenges.
The AI for Earth EU Oceans Award was announced and launched during the 2017 edition of the Our Oceans Conference, hosted by the European Commission in Malta. Applications may be submitted by European research institutions in the 28 EU Member States, or the European Economic Area (EEA), or research consortia that have at least one European partner.
To qualify for our awards program, applicants must be affiliated with an academic institution or non-profit research laboratory. In addition to individual investigator projects, we are interested in projects that will support access to services and projects that exemplify valued data to a broad community. Faculty, researchers, and graduate students are qualified to submit proposals for Azure awards—masters and undergraduate students require a faculty project supervisor to submit their proposals.Deadline: Proposals must be submitted on or before December 15, 2017.
