Manual de Eurostat sobre estimaciones rápidas

CoverHandbook on Rapid Estimates

In an ever more interconnected and interdependent world, where time is increasingly of the essence, more reliable and up-to-date data are needed to enable and support the process of effective decision making, e.g. via rapid estimates.

This handbook provides an overview of the different types of rapid estimates and the statistical and econometric methods for their construction. It also offers guidance for the implementation of rapid estimates in practice and their quality assessment. [+]

CoverTransatlantic trade in services: Investigating bilateral asymmetries in EU-US trade statistics

The EU and the US are the most prominent economic partners in international trade in services in the world. Persistent bilateral asymmetries in their trade statistics remain however a substantial issue that challenges conclusive reading of the data. This paper presents an overview of findings about asymmetries to international trade in services data of the EU and the US, and concludes on a need for higher coordination of the implied statistics. CoverFiltering techniques for big data and big data based uncertainty indexes

This work is concerned with the analysis of outliers detection, signal extraction and decomposition techniques related to big data. In the first part, also with the use of a numerical example, we investigate how the presence of outliers in the big unstructured data might affect the aggregated time series. Any outliers must be removed prior to the aggregation and the resulting time series should be checked further for outliers in the lower frequency. In the second part, we explore the issue of seasonality, also continuing the numerical example. Seasonal patterns are not easily identified in the high frequency series but are evident in the aggregated time series. Finally, we construct uncertainty indexes based on Google Trends and compare them to the corresponding Reuters-based indexes, also checking for outliers and seasonal components. [+]

CoverSelected papers from the 2016 Conference of European Statistics Stakeholders — Special issue

The Conference of European Statistics Stakeholders (CESS) brings together European stakeholders such as official statisticians, methodologists, private data producers/providers and data users. The conference, held biennially, gives participants an opportunity to discuss user needs and exchange good practices in statistical production and outreach. It is also an opportunity to illustrate innovative ways of visualising and communicating statistics and promote new methodological ideas in data conception, collection and analysis.

This special Statistical Working Papers (SWP) issue presents selected papers from CESS 2016, held in Budapest on 20-21 October 2016. The papers highlight many of the current and future themes for ensuring good-quality statistics that are fit for use. [+]

Sustainable Development in the European Union — Overview of progress towards the SDGs in an EU context
This brochure is a ‘light’ version of Eurostat's publication 'Sustainable development in the European Union – 2017 monitoring report on progress towards the SDGs in an EU context', conveying its main messages in a visual and concise way. The brochure builds on the EU SDG indicator set which comprises 100 indicators structured along the 17 SDGs. It presents a first statistical overview of trends for each indicator, described on the basis of a set of specific quantitative rules and focusing on short-term trends over the past five years. For a detailed presentation of the EU trends and a description of the methodology, please refer to the full Eurostat SDG publication. [+]

Revising the EU material deprivation variables
Luxemburgo: Oficina de Publicaciones de la Unión Europe, 2017
In March 2017, the European Union (EU) adopted a new indicator of “material and social deprivation”. This measure was developed by Guio et al (2012) and covers the entire population of the 28 EU Member States. It includes 13 deprivation items and replaces the 9-item “standard” material deprivation index adopted in 2009, by the then 27 EU countries and the European Commission, to monitor progress in the fight against poverty and social exclusion at national and EU level. Drawing on the methodology developed in the context of the 1999 “Poverty and Social Exclusion in the UK Survey”, Guio, Gordon and Marlier (2012) proposed an analytical framework for producing a suitable, valid, reliable and additive deprivation measure for the EU. Their recommendations were based on analyses of the 2009 EU-SILC material deprivation module. This report extends these analyses using the 2014 EU-SILC data and demonstrates that the composition of the new material and social deprivation indicator remains optimal over a five year period of considerable socio-economic change.
